Microneedling is a therapy that naturally stimulates your skin to produce elastin, growth factors and collagen. It helps diminish wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmentation issues such as melasma and sun spots. We use an automated pen-like device that is comfortable, especially with the use of a topical numbing cream prior to your session. You can expect that your skin may be red for one to two days, much like a mild sunburn, and then may lightly flake away a few days later, revealing new, smooth skin. It is a safe method of improving skin texture and tone with minimal downtime.
How to Restore Collagen in the Face
There are many ways to stimulate collagen production in the skin, which keep the skin looking healthy and smooth. The most common and effective ways are laser treatments, microneedling procedures, and retinoid use. Laser treatments are very effective at stimulating the inner layer of skin, the dermis, to produce collagen, but often are uncomfortable and can have a downtime of a week or so. Retinoid use, such as topical Retin-A creams or Accutane pills are also great at stimulating collagen but also have side effects such such as dryness and flaking for multiple weeks until your skin gets used to them. Microneedling also penetrates into the skin’s dermis, encouraging collagen production and has minimal downtime, compared to a laser treatment, which may cause facial swelling and discoloration for one to three weeks. Microneedling, on the other hand, has about one to three days of redness and the procedure itself is comfortable, especially with the use of a topical numbing cream for about half an hour prior to the treatment.
Microneedling Benefits and Side Effects
Microneedling has gained popularity in the last few years because of its safety and efficacy. It is helpful in reducing acne scars, surgical scars, wrinkles, melasma, sun spots, and pore size. It does this by creating microchannels into the dermis, stimulating the release of growth factors, and subsequently collagen formation in the following weeks to months. Immediately after the procedure, it is normal to be red, warm, and slightly swollen for a few hours. It feels much like a sunburn. By the second day, redness may persist but the warmth and swelling will have calmed down. The redness may remain for a few days, especially after your first treatment. As the skin heals, you may also experience temporary darkening that will flake away after a few days. In rare cases, skin infections can occur. In patients who have a tendency to hyperpigment, it is important to discuss this with your provider prior so that the proper precautions are taken.
Our patients truly come first. Your comfort is among our greatest concerns.
We go to great lengths to make our patients comfortable, before, during and following all the procedures. Some of our efforts fall under the “little things count” heading. We offer “little things” like blankets and neck pillows, comfortable chairs, a wide variety of current reading materials, soft home-like lighting throughout the office, and tinted safety glasses during procedures. These may be little touches but we know they are important to you. As part of our commitment to our community, we are constantly working to bring you the best care available.
