Green dentistry represents a revolutionary approach to oral healthcare that prioritizes the health of both patients and the environment. At Natural Dentist Associates in Rockville and North Bethesda, we have embraced this comprehensive philosophy that examines how dental materials, procedures, and office environments impact your overall health and wellbeing while protecting our planet.
Our green dentistry practice is built on the foundation of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) protocols, ensuring that every aspect of your dental care is designed to minimize toxic exposure and maximize health benefits. We understand that the mouth is not separate from the body – it’s an integral part of your overall health system that deserves the safest, most biocompatible treatment possible.
Through rigorous assessment of dental materials, comprehensive toxic exposure evaluation, and implementation of advanced safety protocols, we create a healing environment that supports your body’s natural ability to maintain optimal health. Our commitment extends beyond individual patient care to include sustainable practices that protect our community and planet.
Green dentistry encompasses mercury-free restorations, BPA-free materials, advanced air and water filtration systems, chemical-free treatment options, and comprehensive environmental health testing. Every decision we make is guided by scientific evidence and our unwavering commitment to your safety and environmental responsibility.
Our comprehensive environmental assessment protocol begins with a thorough evaluation of your current oral health status, existing dental materials, and potential sources of environmental toxicity. Using advanced diagnostic techniques and IAOMT-approved assessment methods, we identify areas of concern and develop personalized elimination strategies that protect both your health and the environment.
The assessment process includes detailed analysis of existing dental restorations, evaluation of oral galvanism (electrical currents between different metals), assessment of mercury vapor exposure levels, and identification of potentially toxic dental materials. We also examine your medical history for symptoms that may be related to dental toxicity, including chronic fatigue, neurological symptoms, autoimmune conditions, and unexplained health issues.
Our green elimination protocols follow strict IAOMT guidelines for safe removal of toxic materials while maintaining sustainable practices. This includes the use of high-volume suction systems, dental dams for isolation, activated charcoal supplementation, and specific removal sequences that minimize patient exposure. We work closely with holistic physicians and environmental medicine specialists to ensure comprehensive detoxification support.
Post-removal monitoring includes follow-up assessments to ensure successful elimination of toxic exposure, ongoing health monitoring to track improvement in systemic symptoms, and long-term maintenance protocols to prevent re-exposure. Our goal is not just removal but complete restoration of optimal health through sustainable, eco-friendly dental care.

I am so grateful I learned about Dr. Baer from my chiropractor. My dental needs were not met by my prior general dentists , whose team only approached by dental care focused on six month cleanings, and no sign of cavities. Dr. Baer addressed my exam holistically, which is what I wanted but could not easily find from other dentists I was referred to. She diagnosed and treated my adult lip and tongue frenum constraints that in my generation were not recognized as they are today by this generation of pediatric dentists. I live in Northern Virginia but am happy to make the commute to their offices in Maryland for the best care. I am also working with a MYO Professional, Sarah, who has guided me through mouth exercises before and after my frenumectomies. I realize now how especially beneficial functional dentistry is, and I wish these dentists were more available and discoverable.

I have been coming to this Dentist practice for 20 years and my kid for 10 years! I trust them and the care is outstanding. I’ve enjoyed the care of Dr Baer and Dr Tippograph. Dr Brown did a fantastic job fixing my son’s broken teeth and was so patient through 3 different appointments to get them as close to as they were. That was amazing! We love Kelsey who does our cleanings. I recently had two fillings, one of which was sooo complicated! Dr Tippograph took her time to minimize pain and make sure I was doing ok and comfortable during the whole procedure, fitting me in their schedule because I was flying overseas. I actually declined to see a closer dentist and drove all the way here. The staff is wonderful and respectful and overall you feel safe with their procedures! The billing is clear as they provide you an estimate of your cost ahead of time as they’re an out of network provider and it is an important consideration. Nevertheless, we moved to a different county but we come here because of the great service and value in this practice!
READ MOREGreen dentistry is a comprehensive approach that recognizes the profound impact dental materials and procedures have on both human health and our planet’s ecosystem. Unlike traditional dentistry that focuses solely on treating dental problems, environmental dentistry evaluates every material, chemical, and procedure for its effects on patient health, indoor air quality, and environmental sustainability. We consider factors like mercury vapor release, BPA exposure, electromagnetic fields from equipment, and the carbon footprint of our practice. This approach ensures your dental care doesn’t compromise your health or contribute to environmental toxicity.
Creating a toxin-free dental environment requires multiple layers of protection and careful attention to detail. We use hospital-grade HEPA filtration systems that remove 99.97% of airborne particles including mercury vapor and bacteria. Our water purification systems eliminate chlorine, fluoride, and pharmaceutical residues. We’ve eliminated all mercury-containing materials and use only BPA-free, phthalate-free products. Our office uses low-VOC paints, formaldehyde-free cabinetry, and natural cleaning products. We also maintain negative pressure rooms for amalgam removal and use specialized mercury vapor filters to protect both patients and staff from toxic exposures.
Traditional dental offices often contain numerous environmental toxins that most patients never consider. Mercury vapor from amalgam fillings and their removal is a primary concern, with levels often exceeding EPA safety limits. BPA and bis-GMA in composite resins and sealants act as endocrine disruptors. Fluoride in treatments and water can accumulate to toxic levels. Formaldehyde in root canal materials and disinfectants is a known carcinogen. Many offices use chemical sterilants like glutaraldehyde, latex products causing allergies, and high levels of electromagnetic radiation from older X-ray equipment. Our environmental approach eliminates or safely manages all these hazards.
Our green dentistry practices provide immediate and long-term health benefits beyond just treating dental problems. By eliminating toxic materials, we reduce your body’s total toxic burden, supporting immune function and reducing inflammation. Our chemical-free environment benefits patients with multiple chemical sensitivities, autoimmune conditions, and chronic illnesses. Digital X-rays reduce radiation exposure by up to 90%. Our air and water purification systems create a healing environment that supports respiratory health. Many patients report improvements in energy levels, cognitive function, and overall wellness after switching to environmental dental care.
Our commitment to sustainability encompasses every aspect of our practice operations. We use 100% renewable energy, LED lighting throughout, and Energy Star certified equipment. Our paperless system eliminates thousands of pages annually. We implement comprehensive recycling programs for metals, plastics, and paper. Water conservation measures include low-flow fixtures and closed-loop sterilization systems. We partner with TerraCycle for hard-to-recycle dental materials. Our autoclave sterilization eliminates chemical disinfectants. We source eco-friendly, biodegradable products whenever possible and offset our remaining carbon footprint through certified programs. These practices reduce our environmental impact by over 70% compared to traditional dental offices.
Dental waste management is critical for environmental protection and public health. We use ISO-certified amalgam separators that capture 99% of mercury before it enters wastewater. All extracted teeth with amalgam fillings are stored in sealed containers and processed by certified hazardous waste handlers. We never use mercury-containing products, eliminating ongoing contamination risks. Sharps, biological waste, and pharmaceutical waste are segregated and disposed of through medical waste management services. Digital technology eliminates X-ray chemical waste. We maintain detailed waste tracking logs and exceed all EPA and state environmental regulations for dental waste management.
Indoor air quality in dental offices significantly impacts both immediate comfort and long-term health outcomes. Poor air quality can trigger asthma, allergies, headaches, and fatigue, while chronic exposure to dental office air pollutants contributes to respiratory problems and immune dysfunction. Our multi-stage air purification system removes mercury vapor, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), bacteria, viruses, and allergens. We maintain optimal humidity levels to prevent mold growth and use only essential oil-based aromatherapy instead of synthetic fragrances. Real-time air quality monitoring ensures our environment supports healing rather than adding to your body’s toxic burden.
Electromagnetic radiation from dental equipment is an often-overlooked environmental health factor. Traditional X-ray machines and older equipment can emit concerning levels of EMF radiation. We use state-of-the-art digital radiography that reduces radiation exposure by 90% while providing superior diagnostic images. Our equipment is regularly tested for EMF emissions and shielded where necessary. We position equipment to minimize patient exposure and use protective aprons with thyroid collars for all X-rays. For electrically sensitive patients, we can schedule treatments when certain equipment is not in use, creating a lower-EMF environment.
Our environmental practices are guided by rigorous certifications and standards from leading environmental and health organizations. We’re certified by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) for safe mercury removal protocols. We follow Green Business certification requirements for energy use, waste reduction, and sustainable practices. Our office meets LEED standards for indoor environmental quality. We’re members of the Eco-Dentistry Association and follow their green practice guidelines. Regular third-party environmental audits ensure we maintain the highest standards for air quality, water purity, and waste management.
Patient education is fundamental to green dentistry because many oral health problems stem from environmental exposures. We provide comprehensive consultations explaining how household toxins, dietary choices, and lifestyle factors affect oral health. Our patient resources include guides on choosing non-toxic oral care products, reducing plastic use, and identifying hidden sources of dental toxins in everyday products. We offer workshops on topics like mercury detoxification, chemical-free living, and the oral microbiome. Our goal is empowering patients to make informed choices that protect both their health and the environment.
Environmental toxins play a significant role in chronic dental and systemic health problems that traditional dentistry often overlooks. Heavy metals like mercury and lead interfere with immune function, making patients more susceptible to gum disease and infections. Endocrine disruptors in plastics affect hormone balance, influencing jaw development and increasing cavity risk. Air pollution and environmental chemicals contribute to oral inflammation and delayed healing. Pesticide residues affect the oral microbiome, disrupting the natural bacterial balance that protects against disease. By addressing these environmental factors, we often resolve chronic dental problems that haven’t responded to conventional treatment.
Patients with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) or Environmental Illness (EI) require special accommodations that our environmental approach naturally provides. Our fragrance-free policy eliminates perfumes, scented products, and chemical air fresheners. We schedule these patients during low-traffic times to minimize exposures. All materials are pre-tested for compatibility, and we maintain detailed ingredient lists for every product used. Our purified air and water systems remove triggering chemicals. We use only essential oil-based or unscented cleaning products, applied after hours to allow complete off-gassing. Many chemically sensitive patients who couldn’t tolerate traditional dental offices find they can receive comfortable care in our environment.
