I have been a patient of Dr. Kimberly Baer for 2 years now. She is very caring, kind and gentle. She does not rush and explains procedures and treatments very well. Dentists that take into consideration your overall health and do not use toxins are difficult to find. I live 80 miles away, but I am willing to travel the distance to get this quality of dental care. I highly recommend Natural Dentists Associates.

I’ll admit that I was a bit embarrassed when I first walked into Natural Dentist Associates. My mouth was a total mess: broken, missing teeth, missing crowns, poor gums, all due to long neglect on my part. But Dr. Tipograph and the entire staff gave me nothing but understanding and assurance. After a series of thorough exams, including x-rays, scans, and other imaging, they put together an affordable plan with a mix of crowns, one implant, a very comfortable set of partial dentures, and a night guard. The only problem was that after so many years, I actually had to re-learn how to smile and properly chew my food! I highly recommend them and can’t thank them enough!

I’m very happy with the dentists and oral hygienists I’ve had at Natural Dentist Associates. They’ve been prompt at sending the paperwork to my insurance, and their work filling cavities and cleaning has been excellent.
READ MORERegular prophylaxis (cleaning) maintains healthy gums removing supragingival plaque and calculus above the gumline, typically every 6 months for prevention. Periodontal treatment addresses active disease requiring different procedures and frequency. Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) treats disease by removing subgingival bacteria and calculus below gumline in pockets, smoothing root surfaces eliminating bacterial toxins, requiring local anesthesia due to depth, and typically completing over multiple appointments. Periodontal maintenance (after active treatment) occurs every 3-4 months preventing bacterial recolonization, monitoring for disease recurrence, and addressing deeper pockets requiring specialized instrumentation. Key differences include disease status with healthy gums versus active infection, treatment depth with supragingival versus subgingival instrumentation, anesthesia needs, procedure codes affecting insurance coverage, and frequency requirements. We thoroughly evaluate periodontal status determining appropriate care level. Proper diagnosis ensures receiving treatment needed for optimal long-term outcomes.
Treatment duration depends on disease severity and selected therapies. Initial evaluation (60-90 minutes) includes comprehensive examination, radiographs, discussion of findings, and treatment planning. Non-surgical treatment (scaling and root planing) typically requires 2-4 appointments of 60-90 minutes each, treating 1-2 quadrants per visit under local anesthesia. Advanced therapies may add appointments with laser treatment (LANAP) often completing full mouth in 2 sessions, surgical procedures requiring separate appointments, and regenerative procedures needing additional time. Follow-up evaluation (typically 6-8 weeks after completion) assesses healing and determines maintenance frequency. Ongoing periodontal maintenance continues every 3-4 months indefinitely. Total active treatment timeline runs 4-8 weeks for most non-surgical cases, 2-4 months including surgery and healing, with maintenance continuing lifelong. Our biological protocols often achieve results more quickly through enhanced healing. We provide realistic timelines during treatment planning helping patients schedule appropriately and understand commitment required for successful outcomes.
Modern periodontal treatment involves minimal discomfort with proper anesthesia and technique. During treatment, local anesthesia ensures numbness during scaling and root planing and other procedures. Some patients experience pressure sensations but no pain. We use gentle techniques minimizing trauma. Advanced options include sedation dentistry for anxious patients. After treatment, mild soreness typically resolves within 2-3 days, sensitivity to temperature may occur temporarily, over-the-counter pain relievers usually suffice, and warm salt water rinses promote healing. Discomfort is generally less than many patients expect. Our biological protocols including ozone therapy and laser treatment often reduce post-treatment discomfort compared to conventional approaches. Laser therapy (LANAP) typically causes less pain than traditional surgery with faster recovery. Most patients resume normal activities immediately. Untreated disease causes increasing discomfort including chronic inflammation, abscess formation, and eventual tooth loss requiring extraction. We prioritize patient comfort through appropriate anesthesia, gentle technique, and comprehensive aftercare instructions.
Post-treatment diet supports healing while avoiding irritation. First 24 hours stick to soft cool foods including yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, protein shakes, and soups (not too hot). Avoid hard crunchy foods that might disturb healing, very hot foods or beverages, spicy acidic foods, alcohol, and sticky foods. Days 2-7 gradually reintroduce foods as comfort permits including well-cooked vegetables, soft fruits, tender meats, and whole grains. Continue avoiding hard sharp foods and very hot items. After first week resume normal diet as tolerated, though permanent dietary improvements support periodontal health including anti-inflammatory foods rich in omega-3s, adequate protein for tissue repair, vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables, crunchy vegetables stimulating gums, and reduced sugar and processed foods. Proper nutrition significantly impacts healing speed and long-term periodontal stability. We provide specific nutritional guidance based on individual needs and treatment extent supporting optimal recovery and ongoing gum health.
Home care critically impacts treatment success. First 24 hours avoid brushing or flossing treated areas, rinse gently with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz water) 2-3 times, and take recommended pain medication if needed. Days 2-7 resume gentle brushing with soft-bristled brush, use prescribed antimicrobial rinse if provided, introduce gentle flossing as comfort permits, and continue salt water rinses. Ongoing maintenance includes brush twice daily with soft brush using gentle circular motions, floss daily reaching below gumline, use interdental brushes for larger spaces, consider water flosser for pocket irrigation, use antimicrobial mouth rinse if recommended, and avoid tobacco which severely impairs healing. We may recommend specific products including electric toothbrush with pressure sensor, particular floss or interdental cleaners, and antimicrobial or oxygenating rinses. Schedule all recommended maintenance appointments—home care alone cannot reach bacteria in deep pockets. Compliance with home care and professional maintenance determines long-term success.
Gum tissue response to treatment varies. After scaling and root planing, gums typically shrink and tighten as inflammation resolves, pockets may reduce through reattachment and adaptation, some recession may occur as swollen tissue heals, and healthy pink color returns replacing inflamed redness. Lost bone from periodontitis does not regenerate spontaneously. However, advanced procedures may encourage regeneration with guided tissue regeneration using membranes encouraging new attachment, bone grafting rebuilding lost bone, growth factors (PRF, enamel matrix proteins) stimulating regeneration, and laser therapy potentially promoting new attachment. Regeneration depends on multiple factors including defect type and location, patient age and health, smoking status (dramatically impairs regeneration), compliance with home care, and treatment technique. While gums won’t return to pre-disease state, treatment arrests disease and may improve appearance. Recession exposing roots can often be corrected with gum grafting procedures. Our biological protocols optimize regeneration potential through comprehensive healing support.

Untreated periodontitis causes progressive irreversible damage. Oral consequences include continuing bone loss eventually leading to tooth mobility and loss, gum recession exposing sensitive root surfaces, tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweets, bad breath that persists despite oral hygiene, abscess formation causing pain and swelling, and changes in bite or tooth position. Systemic health risks include increased cardiovascular disease risk from chronic inflammation and bacteria, worsened diabetes control with bidirectional relationship, respiratory infections from bacterial aspiration, increased Alzheimer’s disease risk, and elevated markers of systemic inflammation affecting multiple organs. Financial costs escalate dramatically with tooth replacement (implants, bridges, dentures), increased medical costs from systemic complications, and lost work time from dental pain and procedures. Emotional impacts include embarrassment about appearance and breath, difficulty eating affecting nutrition and quality of life, and decreased self-confidence. Early treatment arrests disease preserving teeth and supporting overall health at fraction of later costs.
Periodontal maintenance prevents disease recurrence after active treatment. Following successful periodontal therapy, pockets remain more susceptible to bacterial recolonization occurring within 9-12 weeks. Maintenance appointments typically every 3-4 months include pocket measurement monitoring for any deepening, removal of calculus and plaque especially in residual pockets, polishing all tooth surfaces, assessment for any signs of disease recurrence, and reinforcement of home care techniques. Maintenance differs from regular cleaning requiring more time and specialized instrumentation, addressing deeper pockets, monitoring disease-susceptible areas, and using different procedure codes affecting insurance coverage. Without maintenance, disease typically recurs causing continued bone loss and eventual tooth loss. Studies show patients in consistent maintenance programs have dramatically better long-term tooth retention. Frequency adjusts based on individual response with high-risk patients (smokers, diabetics, genetic factors) needing 2-3 month intervals while stable cases might extend to 4 months. Insurance usually covers 4 periodontal maintenance visits yearly. Maintenance represents essential investment protecting treatment results and natural teeth.
Early gingivitis may reverse with improved home care and natural approaches, but established periodontitis requires professional intervention. Natural approaches supporting periodontal health include oil pulling with coconut oil showing some antimicrobial benefit, probiotics particularly Lactobacillus reuteri supporting beneficial bacteria, vitamin D optimization (40-60 ng/mL) improving immune function, omega-3 supplementation (2000-3000 mg EPA/DHA) reducing inflammation, vitamin C supporting collagen and immune function, CoQ10 (100-200 mg) improving gum health, green tea extract providing antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, and stress reduction supporting immune function. However, these approaches cannot remove subginginal calculus deposits, eliminate established pockets, or access bacteria deep in tissues. Our biological approach integrates evidence-based natural therapies with necessary professional treatment including professional removal of subgingival deposits, advanced antimicrobial therapies (ozone, laser), nutritional optimization, and comprehensive maintenance programs. This combination provides superior results compared to either approach alone, addressing disease while supporting natural healing mechanisms for optimal long-term periodontal health.
Scaling and root planing (SRP) represents primary non-surgical periodontal treatment. Scaling removes bacterial plaque, calculus (tartar), and toxins from tooth surfaces both above (supragingival) and below (subgingival) the gumline using specialized hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers. Root planing smooths root surfaces removing embedded toxins and microscopic irregularities where bacteria accumulate, creating smooth surface discouraging recolonization and allowing gum reattachment. The procedure typically occurs under local anesthesia ensuring comfort, treats one or more quadrants per appointment, may take 60-90 minutes per quadrant, and may be enhanced with ozone therapy, laser treatment, or local antimicrobials. Expected outcomes include pocket depth reduction, reduced bleeding and inflammation, gum tissue shrinkage and tightening, possible increased sensitivity temporarily, and improved gum color and health. Follow-up evaluation typically 6-8 weeks post-treatment assesses healing and determines if additional treatment needed. SRP forms foundation of periodontal therapy with success rates of 70-80% for mild to moderate disease when combined with good home care and regular maintenance.
Diabetes and periodontitis share bidirectional relationship where each condition worsens the other. Diabetes impacts periodontal health through impaired immune response reducing infection-fighting capacity, poor wound healing delaying tissue repair, increased inflammatory response causing more destruction, altered collagen metabolism weakening gum attachment, and changes in blood vessels reducing oxygen and nutrient delivery. Periodontitis worsens diabetes by increasing systemic inflammation elevating blood sugar, releasing inflammatory mediators impairing insulin function, and adding stress load on metabolic systems. Treatment considerations for diabetic patients include blood sugar control before procedures, possible antibiotic prophylaxis for unstable diabetes, more frequent monitoring and maintenance, emphasis on infection control, coordination with physician optimizing medical management, and aggressive nutritional support. Studies show successful periodontal treatment improves HbA1c levels by approximately 0.4-0.7%—significant for diabetes management. We work closely with physicians coordinating care. Diabetic patients must prioritize periodontal health to support overall disease management and prevent complications.
Periodontal treatment costs vary based on disease severity and procedures needed. Initial comprehensive periodontal evaluation costs $100-300. Non-surgical treatment (scaling and root planing) averages $150-400 per quadrant, $600-1,600 for full mouth. Advanced therapies include laser treatment (LANAP) $1,500-4,000 full mouth, ozone therapy $50-150 per application, and antimicrobial treatments $50-150 per quadrant. Surgical procedures range $500-3,000 per area depending on complexity. Periodontal maintenance costs $150-300 per visit with 3-4 visits yearly ongoing. Most dental insurance provides periodontal coverage though benefits vary—we submit documentation and pre-treatment estimates. Without treatment, costs escalate dramatically with tooth loss requiring implants ($3,000-6,000 each), bridges, or dentures, and increased medical costs from systemic complications. Investment in proper treatment saves money long-term while preserving natural teeth and supporting overall health. We discuss all costs upfront and offer payment plans ensuring treatment accessibility. Periodontal health represents investment in lifelong tooth retention and overall wellness.
